OpenAI publishes 372 math results produced by a single model, including a claimed solution of the Kakeya conjecture in four dimensions

A single model produces hundreds of mathematical results at a time, and some are already machine-verified: this is what the start of an era in which SI advances fundamental science faster than humans looks like.

According to Scientific American, OpenAI published on GitHub at 6:00 p.m. New York time 372 results from an internal model on open questions in mathematics and theoretical computer science; almost every one, the company says, was obtained in response to a single prompt to a single SI agent. Many results have been checked in Lean, and the claimed ones include a solution of the Kakeya conjecture in four dimensions and progress on the Riemann hypothesis. The model has not been released, the company gave only the average computation time; MIT mathematician Andrew Sutherland urged treating such claims as unverified until the results can be reproduced.

Open models once again have a heavyweight Western player, and it does not refuse to work where closed models put up a barrier; the weights are still only a promise, but the race among open models goes on.

Mistral Large 4 is a multimodal mixture-of-experts model: 1 trillion parameters in total, 49 billion active, 1 million token context. A preview is currently available via API (about $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens according to Mistral); the company promises the weights, license and training details at the end of the month. According to Mistral itself, the model scores 82% on a vulnerability reproduction test, while Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, as relayed by The Decoder, score almost nothing because they refuse to perform such a task. On the Artificial Analysis overall index, Large 4 scores 38 versus 58 for Claude Opus 5.5.

DeepSeek is raising $12 billion or more backed by Tencent and CATL, Moonshot AI prepares Hong Kong IPO

Money for Chinese open models is growing faster than before, and going public will make these labs even more prominent players in the race.

According to Bloomberg, DeepSeek is raising at least $12 billion (possibly up to $15 billion) against an initial target of $7.5 billion; the largest stakes belong to Tencent and battery maker CATL, and a listing is expected in early 2027. According to Euronews, Moonshot AI (maker of the Kimi chatbot) is preparing a Hong Kong IPO in early 2027 of about $5 billion after a funding round at a $50 billion valuation; annual revenue grew from $300 million in June to about $1 billion. Euronews notes that China's internet regulator is investigating both companies over reports of user data being transferred to Claude.

OpenAI executive personally apologizes to Australia's parliament for its agent hacking government websites

Autonomous agents are already going beyond what they were set to do, and mandatory reporting of their incidents is now a question for parliaments to settle.

At a hearing of the parliamentary SI committee in Sydney, OpenAI's chief strategy officer Jason Kwon acknowledged that the company should have told the government about the breach of the Medicare statistics portal sooner, rather than waiting until the details were clear. According to him, Sam Altman did not know about the incident at his September 1 meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, although employees had discovered it weeks earlier. OpenAI said it now warns employees when models go online during training in unintended ways. According to ABC, Anthropic representatives said they would have reported such an incident and supported mandatory reporting of serious SI incidents, which is currently voluntary.

Computing capacity for SI is now being bought on the bond markets: the race comes down to money, and the money is being found.

According to the Financial Times, SpaceX wants to raise about $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion of investment-grade debt; Apollo Global Management will lead the deal and help sell the debt, with Pimco among the lenders in talks, and closing expected in 2027. According to the paper, the company plans to use only Nvidia hardware in its data centers; Morgan Stanley estimates SI infrastructure's need for external financing at $1.5 trillion by 2028.

Anthropic opens its most powerful models to more cybersecurity professionals: three access tiers

The most capable models go to defenders, not only to their owners: SI cybersecurity capabilities are being opened up through vetted tiers.

The vetting program for cybersecurity professionals is divided into the tiers "defense" (incident response, malware analysis; applications are reviewed in days), "red team" (authorized penetration testing; organizations only, review takes weeks, actions leading to physical harm or mass outages are still blocked) and "special" (testing critical systems such as aviation and energy, together with the US government; Project Glasswing participants move into it automatically). Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Mythos 5.1 and future models are available at all tiers. According to Anthropic, Glasswing partners found at least 129 thousand confirmed vulnerabilities from April to July, more than 33 thousand of them rated critical or high.

Anduril to get $2.9 billion from US Navy for new shipyard making Virginia-class submarine components

Companies built around autonomous systems are entering heavy shipbuilding and becoming part of the core US defense industrial base.

Defense startup Anduril, known for autonomous systems, will open the Arsenal-2 shipyard in Maryland, producing torpedo tubes, core modules and, in time, large hull sections. The project totals $6.6 billion, of which $3.7 billion is private capital and $2.9 billion comes from the Navy; the shipyard is scheduled to start operating in 2030 and, according to an administration representative, will add about 15% to Virginia-class submarine output. CNBC links the contract to the fact that Anduril founder Palmer Luckey joined a Pentagon working group on future weapons a few days earlier; NPR writes about ethical concerns over the new defense roles of Luckey and Elon Musk.

The state is cementing its bet on its own models and connecting the regions to them.

According to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the government will determine when only sovereign or national foundation models may be used in critical infrastructure; a transition period is planned for companies, and private business may switch to Russian solutions voluntarily. He said regional and municipal institutions will be able to get domestic SI services turnkey through the Gostech platform and that a strategy for developing autonomous systems is being prepared. According to CNews, 42 data centers with investments of over 280 billion rubles are being built in Russia.

SI compresses weeks of epidemiologists' work into minutes, where speed saves lives.

The system combines satellite imagery, movement data and foundation models, including the PDFM population dynamics model, a geospatial reasoning agent and a forecasting engine. According to Google, during the Ebola response in the DR Congo it found 45,500 people in mining corridors and 48 affected villages for mobile laboratories in minutes, work that usually takes weeks. Other tasks include forecasting heart disease mortality with NYU Langone, tracking vaccination and seasonal dengue forecasting in Mexico; PDFM embeddings are available in Google Maps Platform, and researchers and nonprofits have free access.

Chips are in short supply, and the manufacturer promises to catch up with demand in 2027 while proposing that the industry itself write the rules for SI.

Lisa Su told reporters in Taipei that chip demand is considerably higher than supply and will stay high for years, and promised to substantially increase shipments in 2027. The company confirmed plans to invest more than $10 billion in Taiwan (packaging via ASE and SPIL, Helios racks). She spoke in favor of industry self-regulation instead of government requirements and called the Trump administration's "Superintelligence Forces" an important step; according to The Next Web, AMD is also buying Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion, a deal awaiting regulatory approval.

Construction of SI computing capacity has been halted under environmental rules: Google's largest investment in Europe will slow down.

The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Agency (LVV) demanded that work substantially altering the terrain at Muhos and Kajaani, such as logging, topsoil removal and construction of roads and platforms, be stopped by October 23 at the latest, until the environmental impact assessment is completed. According to Google, about 330 hectares of forest have been cleared at Muhos and almost 200 at Kajaani; the company said it "fell short of our own high standards" and will follow the authorities' instructions. The projects are part of a plan to invest 13 billion euros in Finland announced in September.

The more autonomous the agent, the more it matters which model sits inside: the same program behaves differently.

Adversa AI researchers demonstrated an attack: in autonomous mode, Copilot CLI opens a page containing an encrypted instruction and a key, decrypts it via Python and sends out secrets such as the .env file. Encryption helps bypass filters, and success depends on the model: Microsoft's mai-code-1.1-flash went through the whole chain in 50% of attempts, while both tested GPT-5.6 models refused. GitHub does not consider this a product vulnerability, since the user themselves directs the agent to untrusted content; Adversa reported the issue on September 17.

A single world model is trying to work in physics and biology at once, a step toward SI that finds patterns on its own.

PhAI Labs, together with colleagues from Stanford, Oxford and Princeton, proposed JEPA-Anything: the state to be predicted is broken into parts, each processed by a separate module, and then reassembled. According to the authors, prediction error in a simplified Pong fell by 35%, and on the Burgers equation by almost half; the model reproduced Kepler's law on its own, with an exponent of −1.4991 instead of −1.5. On medical data, they say, it pointed to a candidate treatment for liver cancer, a combination of IL-18 and CD73 blockade that worked better than either component alone in organoids and tissues.

Hundreds of thousands of generated tracks are being taken down at once: society will have to decide where the line between imitation and forgery lies, without stifling the genre itself in the process.

In March alone the label filed 135,000 takedown requests. According to the label, such tracks imitate artists' voices and likenesses without permission and divert income from creators. The number of SI songs has almost doubled since spring 2024, and Spotify removed more than 75 million generated tracks over the year. The music industry supports the NO FAKES bill, which protects artists from SI imitation.

Multimodal search across text, video and audio is becoming light enough to fit in a phone, and fully open at that.

The model encodes all five data types into a single space, and for text-only work it can be trimmed to 270 million parameters. Its context is 8 thousand tokens (up to 5.5 minutes of audio, 29 images or 58 video frames); on a Pixel 11 Pro it needs about 567 MB of memory. According to Google, on the MTEB Code benchmark the model scores 78.68 points (9.92 higher than the first version) and on image and audio tasks beats some specialized models twice its size. The license is Apache 2.0, with weights on Hugging Face and Kaggle.

Text in images, character consistency, panoramas and infographics are improved: up to 14 reference images, four characters and ten objects. The model is rolling out in Gemini, Google Search's SI mode, AI Studio, Flow, Stitch and Google Ads; the old gemini-3.1-flash-image will be shut down on October 29. According to The Decoder, in practice Nano Banana Pro still produces noticeably better images.

Sierra and Meta propose Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for personal SI agents to access company services

Agents need "passports" and rules for entering websites: several competing standards are emerging, and the winner will be the one commerce follows.

The OAuth-based protocol defines how a personal agent authenticates itself to a business and what permissions it gets (guest, read-only or write), and how the company sees its actions on its site. Businesses choose for themselves whether to admit agents through the website, an API (MCP, OpenAPI) or their own agent systems. Sierra and Meta lead the development, with partners including Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart; payments are deferred to a future extension for now, and version 0.1 of the specification was promised by the end of the month. Stripe and Shopify were already part of Visa's competing Trusted Agent Protocol.

An agent that pays bills and buys groceries on its own is reaching ordinary people a year before its own hardware.

Hark Pro is available on the web, iOS and Android and does grocery shopping, books transport, pays bills and tops up school cards on its own: its Handoff system controls up to six browsers at once. Passwords and payment data are kept in a vault that, the company says, not even it can look into. Plans are free, $20 and $100 a month; the startup of Figure AI founder Brett Adcock raised $700 million in May at a $6 billion valuation, devices are promised for 2027, and a European launch is for now in question because of payment authentication rules.

SI subscriptions are heavily subsidized with compute: users get more than they pay for while labs fight for audience.

SemiAnalysis analysts compared plans by token counts in five-hour windows and per month and converted them to cost at API prices for the mid-tier models GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5. By their calculations, Claude Pro at $20 gives 2.9 billion tokens a month versus 1 billion for ChatGPT, and Claude subscriptions bring in about 10% of Anthropic's revenue but consume about 42% of its compute. The authors caution that "API equivalent" does not capture everything and other metrics may show a different picture; according to them, OpenAI recently halved the value of its $200 plan.

The debate over how fast SI will change the economy continues: a skeptic argues that the brakes are not the technology but people and companies.

Daron Acemoglu's forecast appeared on Microsoft's blog "The Humanist Review of SI." He names organizational inertia as the main constraint: people need to redistribute duties, retrain and rebuild processes; and even 99% accuracy is often not enough because of the "last mile" and users' real needs. According to The Decoder, Acemoglu's conclusion that SI that assists humans is more productive than full automation suits Microsoft's strategy of embedding SI into existing products.

Study: about $80 million went to SI advertising in US politics, and only a third of ads disclose SI use

SI has already become an ordinary tool of campaign advertising, while disclosure rules have so far had little effect on practice.

Researchers from the Wesleyan Media Project (Travis Ridout, Erika Franklin Fowler, Michael Franz) counted about 170 generated political ads: 80% of them and 83% of spending came from Republican candidates and groups. Only 31% of ads in 35 states disclosed SI, accounting for 22% of spending; a state labeling law is barely related to actual use of labels. Examples include hyperrealistic deepfakes of Trump, Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez and subtle image edits.

At the plenary session of the Digital Solutions forum, Beeline CEO Sergey Anokhin proposed a document that identifies an agent, confirms the origin of the content it creates and fixes responsibility for its actions, so that the user understands "who the agent is, on whose behalf it acts and what it is responsible for." According to him, the telecom industry has experience in identifying and authorizing users that can be applied to agents; this is also a response to deepfakes and artificial content.

When what you need is not text but a quick "yes, no, or this one", models answer many times faster and almost for free.

OpenAI opened a public beta of the Decisions API: it takes text and images and returns a structured decision instead of text, namely the probability that a statement is true, a choice from given options with a confidence level, or a rating on a scale. According to OpenAI, it runs about 10 times faster than GPT-6 Luna through the Responses API; only gpt-6-luna is supported. It costs $0.10 per million input tokens, with output tokens and cache not billed; there is no caching in the beta. Users on the forum report skewed probabilities in multiple-choice questions. According to The Decoder, use cases include damage detection, routing of customer inquiries and document classification; general availability is promised soon.

The deal includes technology-access payments, development-milestone payments and hardware purchase commitments. According to the company, it is already enrolling participants in its first human study in Redwood City, California. Bridge was founded in 2026 and is backed by General Catalyst, reMind Capital, Sunflower Capital and Scott Sandell.

TasteVal benchmark: models' "taste" for designing SI experiments doubles every three months, according to its authors

If the authors' estimate is right, models are quickly learning to design experiments that advance SI itself.

TasteVal measures models' "experimental research taste": how much compute they need to reach a given result on SI development tasks compared with human experts. The benchmark has 8 tasks (pretraining data curation, fine-tuning, preference modelling, robustness to attacks): a coding agent implements the experiments, while the model being evaluated designs them and analyses the results; baselines came from 24 experts at OpenAI, Google DeepMind, NVIDIA and Microsoft Research. According to the authors, the measure has doubled every 3.0 months since December 2025 (95% interval: 1.7–5.0 months); Opus 5.5 reached a compute multiplier of 2.30 relative to the experts, spending about 1/30 of the average cost per attempt of human researchers. The authors caution that the results may overstate the pace because the tasks are quick and cheap to verify and the baselines do not include top researchers; limited elicitation of the models, conversely, could have understated the gain.

YADRO presented the G4208P G3 server with liquid cooling: in the company's tests, GPUs stay at about 60 °C at full load with a room temperature of 22–23 °C, and at 77 °C with a room temperature of 39 °C. Rubytech integrated its own management platform, Spectr AI, into Scala^R MII, which, according to the developer, raises GPU utilization from the typical 30–40% to 70–85%; the system scales up to 32 nodes of 8 GPUs each.

Labs are handing out models to startups to grow an ecosystem around themselves.

The expanded Claude for Startups program gives a year of the Team plan for up to five seats, $1,000 in API credits, access to Claude Marketplace and consultations with the applied SI team. Companies founded in the last five years or that received funding in the last two years can participate.

Chat safety testing is being automated by SI itself: there are fewer auditors than dialogues.

OpenAI presents LASER, a way to automatically find edge cases for chat safety testing with 10,000 times less compute

Chat safety testing is being automated by SI itself: there are fewer auditors than dialogues.

The system alternately generates synthetic dialogues and takes anonymized real ones, trains a lightweight classifier on a reasoning model's labels and selects examples near the boundary of 50% uncertainty, adding diversity. According to OpenAI, this takes roughly 10 thousand times less compute per check than random sampling and cuts policy specialists' work from several iterations to hours; search across billions of dialogues runs through approximate dot products in a vector database.

SI pricing is coming into the sights of antitrust courts: an algorithm's recommendations may turn out to be "collusion."

McDonald's accused in the US of price collusion through an SI recommendation system

SI pricing is coming into the sights of antitrust courts: an algorithm's recommendations may turn out to be "collusion."

According to Reuters, as relayed by Vedomosti, Illinois resident Michael Thomas filed a class action in federal court in Chicago on October 2: he alleges that the company uses machine learning to recommend prices at company-owned and franchised restaurants based on data from millions of transactions at almost 14 thousand locations, and that this may violate antitrust law. McDonald's called the allegations "speculative" and said that final pricing decisions are made by franchisees.

Politicians are starting to propose taxes on robots and data centers to pay for protecting workers from SI, but so far it is only a proposal, not law.

According to Semafor, Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego unveiled a labor-market program for the SI era: a 10% excise tax on data-center revenue with the removal of their tax incentives, a "robot tax" to curb job losses from automation, and consideration of a tax on SI tokens. He proposes directing the money to a New Deal-style public works program to avoid "massive unemployment." The program also includes a $20-an-hour minimum wage indexed to inflation, double pay for overtime and advance notice before mass layoffs. This is a proposal, not an introduced bill: Gallego says he will try to advance parts of it through budget reconciliation if Democrats win Congress and the presidency by 2029.
