Study: about $80 million went to SI advertising in US politics, and only a third of ads disclose SI use

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Publication time restored from the build log. . Updated: .

SI has already become an ordinary tool of campaign advertising, while disclosure rules have so far had little effect on practice.

Researchers from the Wesleyan Media Project (Travis Ridout, Erika Franklin Fowler, Michael Franz) counted about 170 generated political ads: 80% of them and 83% of spending came from Republican candidates and groups. Only 31% of ads in 35 states disclosed SI, accounting for 22% of spending; a state labeling law is barely related to actual use of labels. Examples include hyperrealistic deepfakes of Trump, Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez and subtle image edits.
