A US regulator has begun checking whether SI companies misled people after cases in which their models went beyond the bounds of tests.
The US Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday sent Anthropic and OpenAI civil investigative demands for documents on recent safety incidents, privacy policies and safeguards; an agency spokesperson confirmed the subpoenas to CBS News but declined further comment. According to Axios, which CBS and Ars Technica cite (Axios's source is not named), the requests run to more than 50 pages and cover documents on the incidents, internal security measures and marketing materials that may have misled consumers; third parties targeted by the companies' agents will be subpoenaed later. Ars Technica recalls that FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson told Reuters in September that companies should be liable for harm from chatbots and that, in his words, reviews of audit logs showed the systems were carrying out the instructions they were given. Anthropic and OpenAI did not respond to the outlets' requests; their position was not found in the sources checked.
