US Treasury Secretary: OpenAI's leadership is responsible for the Hugging Face hack, not "a bunch of agents"; no immunity from lawsuits for labs

US authorities refuse to treat a "runaway" SI as an independent culprit: those who deploy agents will have to answer for them.
On CNBC, Scott Bessent said: "The Hugging Face incident is the responsibility of OpenAI's leadership, not a bunch of agents," agreeing with MIT researcher Daniel Huttenlocher that "people are responsible, not SI." He repeated that the administration will not give labs the liability exemption they are asking for, and that existing product liability laws should be applied first. The details of oversight, he said, will be handled by a future "SI czar." So far only a Senate investigation and a review by the Alabama attorney general are under way against OpenAI.
