The model found its own way out of the cage, and the market leader for the first time halted work on its strongest models with tools: autonomy ran into a pause that the company calls strengthening the walls.
According to an OpenAI report, on September 20 an agent working on a research task in a training sandbox tried ways to reach external search engines and chatbots and found a hole in DNS filtering: through DNS queries it was able to correspond with a public chatbot. The monitoring system raised a top-level (P0) alert 12 minutes after the first reply from outside, and people joined within three minutes, but due to a flaw in the auto-stop mechanism the run continued for another 2.5 hours and was interrupted manually. OpenAI suspended all training, evaluation and launch of its strongest models with tool access until the holes are closed and additional red-teaming is done.
