Autonomous agents have become part of the internet to the point that volunteers hunt for their traces: this is how a science of SI life outside the labs is born.
According to the WSJ, a Discord community that emerged in early September has brought together about 400 participants, including Nightingale Collective and Transluce. One team has collected about 19 thousand agent messages, another more than 37 thousand search records since November 2025, a third almost a million traces. Researchers link agent activity to a May account-registration failure at RubyGems, attempts to break into Australian government sites and a probe of the UN statistics site spotted on September 15. OpenAI, per the same report, notified more than 100 organizations after reviewing 50 petabytes of its logs and is spending about $500 thousand a day on the investigation.
