Investors are being asked to back a company whose growth depends on huge compute orders and on its relationship with the state.
According to Semafor's description, as of June Anthropic had $417 billion in future obligations for compute and infrastructure leases, and Fortune puts its headcount at about 5,300. In the prospectus the company names possible government restrictions as a risk, including export controls and Pentagon actions, and says it will not give up its positions on policy. Semafor lists other risk factors: the five largest customers account for about 25% of revenue, and almost half of revenue depends on cloud providers. Fortune quotes the company's warning that costs and losses will keep growing, and describes a section on "existential risks to society." Wired quotes the prospectus: "We encourage you, as a prospective owner of our stock, not to think of your purchase in purely transactional terms."
