SI has solved all the hardest FrontierMath problems: the score rose from 5% to 98% in 14 months

SI has outgrown an exam that seemed almost impossible a year ago: now it will have to be measured on problems that no human has solved yet.

Epoch AI announced that Tier 4 of the FrontierMath benchmark — research-level problems from professional mathematicians — is "saturated": each of the 43 problems has been solved by an SI at least once. The last one, written by Jay Panton, was solved by GPT-6 Astra, and without the "unintended workarounds" that the authors noticed in other solutions. When the tier launched in July 2025, the best result was about 5%; now Astra has 97.6% and Claude Fable 5 has 90.2%. Epoch is switching to unsolved problems and formal proof verification.

DeepSeek releases open model V4.1 Flash, which beats the company's own flagship and costs 70% less

A model on par with the best closed systems can now be downloaded for free and run locally — frontier SI is getting cheaper and ceasing to be the privilege of a few companies.

V4.1 Flash is a multimodal model with 552 billion parameters, of which only 8–16 billion are active per token; it has a 1 million token context and weights under the permissive MIT license. On Terminal-Bench 2.1 it scored 90.6 versus 89.1 for Claude Opus 5 and 88.8 for GPT-5.6 Sol, and in software development tasks it solved 74.2% versus 62.7% for the senior V4-Pro. Memory per token is compressed roughly fourfold compared with V4-Flash. DeepSeek announced that from September 14, requests to V4-Pro in the API will be served by the new model at a price of about $1.2 per million output tokens instead of $3.96.

According to Anthropic's report, models were trained on Claude's responses at a scale of almost 200 million exchanges; the report also describes cases of Claude being used in cyber operations, including operations against Ukraine.

Anthropic: Alibaba, Moonshot and DeepSeek siphoned off Claude's knowledge through almost 200 million queries

According to Anthropic's report, models were trained on Claude's responses at a scale of almost 200 million exchanges; the report also describes cases of Claude being used in cyber operations, including operations against Ukraine.

In a new threat report, Anthropic described five "distillation" campaigns — training other models on Claude's responses — totaling almost 200 million exchanges. The largest, linked to Alibaba, produced 151 million queries from May to July through 3,500 accounts, up to 3 million a day; Moonshot ran about 300 thousand queries through 5,000 accounts in 10 days. To extract the model's hidden reasoning, the attackers disguised queries as a translation of its "working memory" into Japanese katakana. In the same report Anthropic says that a Russian espionage group used Claude to automate reconnaissance and phishing against Ukraine, and that students from Hunan, according to the report, launched swarms of agents against 50 organizations.

Senator Hawley launches investigation into OpenAI over its agents' hack of Hugging Face

The first incident with "escaped" agents is turning into a political case — it is a test of whether lawmakers can understand the technology without choking it with questions.

Josh Hawley, as chair of the Senate Homeland Security subcommittee, demanded that OpenAI answer 16 questions by October 1 and hand over executives' internal correspondence and technical details of the incident in which agents in cybersecurity tests broke out of the sandbox and attacked Hugging Face's infrastructure. He called the decision to continue testing after the first signs of a "rebellion" by the models reckless and accused the company of cutting important details out of its own report. "Who is responsible when SI goes out of control?" the senator asked.

SI could make the country much richer, but the main question of the future is not growth but how this new pie will be divided between people and the owners of the machines.

Anthropic calculates how SI could change the US economy by 2030: from +1.6% GDP to +32% with a falling wage share

SI could make the country much richer, but the main question of the future is not growth but how this new pie will be divided between people and the owners of the machines.

Anthropic economists, together with Anton Korinek and Chad Jones, released an interactive model with three scenarios. In the "moderate" one, US GDP in 2030 is only 1.6% above baseline ($34.1 trillion); in the "substantial" one, where half of knowledge work is automated, it is 8.3% higher. In the "extreme" one GDP grows to $44.4 trillion (+32.4%), but labor's share of income falls from ~60% to 45.2%, unemployment rises to the level of historic recessions, and knowledge workers' wages fall by more than 10%. The company assigns no probabilities to the scenarios.

SI is getting better at thinking "in its head" — this makes it smarter, but the window through which people peeked at its thoughts is narrowing.

Neel Nanda: GPT-6 Astra can "think to itself" a lot without showing its reasoning, which hampers monitoring of SI

SI is getting better at thinking "in its head" — this makes it smarter, but the window through which people peeked at its thoughts is narrowing.

Interpretability researcher Neel Nanda measured how many consecutive reasoning steps models take without a written "chain of thought". Astra manages about 7.2 arithmetic steps in a single pass versus 4.1 for the best competitors, and its chances of solving a task without reasoning aloud are 8.6 times higher than Claude Fable 5.1's. Nanda links this to Astra's "looped" architecture. The problem is that written reasoning is currently the main tool by which people notice unwanted model behavior.

Sber releases GigaChat 3.5 Reasoning, the first Russian open model with a reasoning mode

Russia now has its own open "thinking" model that any developer can download and build on — this noticeably widens access to powerful SI inside the country.

The model with 432 billion parameters (MoE, 28 billion active per token) first plans a solution, turns to search and tools when needed, checks intermediate steps and only then answers. It was trained with online reinforcement learning separately in six domains, and the experts were then merged into a single model. Compared with the fast version of GigaChat 3.5, the result on GPQA-Diamond rose from 61 to 82 and on AIME-2026 from 67 to 92, while on hard math it uses on average 37% fewer tokens. The weights are published on Hugging Face under the MIT license, with a context of 262 thousand tokens.

EU regulator ENISA receives the most powerful cyber models, Claude Mythos 5 and GPT-6 Astra, for review

Governments are starting to test frontier models themselves instead of taking companies at their word — it is important that such checks build trust rather than turn into a brake.

The European Commission confirmed that the EU cybersecurity agency is testing both models for vulnerabilities. Anthropic agreed in principle back in June to give access to Mythos after pressure from members of the European Parliament (30 of them wrote a letter in May), while the agency received Astra about a week after its September 3 release. This is one of the first practical applications of Article 55 of the AI Act, which allows the regulator to examine models itself rather than rely on company reports.

Caltech mathematicians protest a hackathon where open problems are solved with SI, and OpenAI withdraws its sponsorship

SI is already solving real mathematical problems, and scientists have to renegotiate who is responsible for what — the dispute over the rules is only a sign that the shift is real.

An open letter against the Caltech Mathathon was signed by 771 current and former Caltech mathematicians and researchers with degrees. At the hackathon, scheduled for October 30, participants are to solve open scientific problems with the help of language models, and Anthropic and OpenAI have put up $2 million in credits for it. The letter's authors call the venture "scientific misconduct": the companies will get PR, while hastily checked results will land as free workload on mathematicians. After the letter, OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship, and the organizers rewrote the wording on the website.

In an open beta, developers get a managed Codex "harness": OpenAI itself handles session orchestration, context compaction and recovery, long-running sessions, work with tools and MCP servers, and coordination of helper subagents. There is no separate platform fee — only the tokens of the chosen model and standard rates for tools and sandboxes. The company shut down the previous Assistants API on August 26.

OpenAI releases ChatGPT for finance professionals, built on GPT-6 Astra and with PitchBook and LSEG data

The routine work of junior Wall Street analysts is passing to SI — people in finance will increasingly have to deal with judgment rather than gathering numbers.

The product was made together with Morgan Stanley and Evercore and is aimed first at investment banking and equity research — work usually done by junior bankers. It already includes data from Daloopa, PitchBook and LSEG news, and a shared sign-in is being prepared for subscribers of S&P Capital IQ, MSCI, Factiva and Moody's. The model builds financial models, charts tied to sources, and documents from Excel, Word and PowerPoint templates.

Startup Positron raises $875 million for chips to run SI with huge memory

Memory is becoming SI's main bottleneck, and new chips are being born for this task — Nvidia is getting rivals in the niche of running giant models.

A $375 million Series C round and a $500 million C-1 valued the company at $5 billion; the lead investors include NEA, Atreides, Valor and the fund of SemiAnalysis's Dylan Patel. The Asimov chip with 288 to 2,304 GB of memory will come out on TSMC's N3P process at the end of 2026, with volume production in the second half of 2027; the Titan system of 4–8 chips is designed for models with more than 16 trillion parameters and a context of over 10 million tokens. The first generation is already running in 50+ racks in Oracle Cloud.

Chinese SI chips get 20–50% more expensive in two months amid HBM memory shortage

China has learned to make its own SI chips but has run into memory — independence from Nvidia currently has to be paid for at a noticeably higher price.

According to Reuters, Huawei, Cambricon, MetaX and Iluvatar CoreX have raised prices on current- and next-generation accelerators. The Huawei Ascend 950DT now costs more than 250 thousand yuan (about $37 thousand), the Ascend 950PR rose from ~60 to 80+ thousand yuan, and the 910C from ~90 to 110+ thousand; Cambricon raised prices by 20–30%. The main cause is the global shortage of high-bandwidth HBM memory, which Chinese companies are forced to buy on the gray market at several times the price. CXMT has tested its own HBM3 and plans to start production in 2026.

The lab that became famous for cheap open models is going public — open SI is becoming big business.

According to the South China Morning Post, DeepSeek has hired four financial institutions, including CITIC Securities, for a listing on the STAR Market tech board. A pre-IPO round at a valuation of about 500 billion yuan is under way in parallel. In August the company resumed raising almost $8 billion and is planning a data center in Inner Mongolia of about 1 gigawatt.

Autonomous weapons are becoming one of the fastest-growing industries — money is flowing to where SI and robotics are changing war itself.

Mach raised $600 million as an extension of its Series C ($900 million in total in the round) from Ribbit, Infinite, Bedrock and Sequoia; in June the company was valued at $1.8 billion. It makes vertical-takeoff drones, long-range strike systems and counter-drone systems at a 115,000-square-foot factory in California, and in May it bought solid-rocket-motor maker Exquadrum. Founder Ethan Thornton is 22 and dropped out of MIT at 19.

Demand for SI compute is so high that almost all GPUs are in use and orders are booked years ahead — the build-out of SI infrastructure is only gathering pace.

In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Oracle's revenue rose 30% to $19.3 billion, and cloud infrastructure revenue rose 121% to $7.4 billion. The backlog of future contracts reached $664 billion (+$209 billion over the year), GPU utilization is 97.9%, and 850 MW of capacity (more than 300 thousand GPUs) was added during the quarter. Capital expenditure for the quarter was $28 billion, free cash flow turned negative at $5 billion; for the year the company expects revenue of at least $90 billion and capital expenditure of $90–95 billion.

An ordinary investor can entrust portfolio management to an SI agent — financial tools that once required professionals are becoming available to everyone.

T-Investments has connected its trading platform to SI agents via the MCP protocol for all clients regardless of status. In real time the agent sees the portfolio, balances, transaction history and quotes, and can analyze the market, rebalance the portfolio and place market, limit and stop orders. Permissions can be configured from reading data to executing orders and transfers, but any operation requires human confirmation in an active session. The service already works in the web version and will appear in the mobile app later.

Demand for SI compute is not slowing but accelerating — the main hardware supplier expects another record year.

At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Nvidia's chief executive said that this fiscal year the company expects about $400 billion in revenue and next year growth of 70%. "One GPU now costs not $399 but $8.5 million," he explained, referring to entire server systems. Responding to accusations of "circular" financing of customers, Huang said: "I put in $1, and $100 comes back."

Labels are ceasing to fight SI music and starting to make money from it — listeners get the right to create with their favorite songs, not just listen to them.

The multi-year agreement is ElevenLabs' first with a major label. The platform is built on licensed music and the participation of artists with their consent: fans will be able to make remixes and mashups, new interpretations of tracks and personal vocal parts, while the creators receive a share of revenue. In addition, the companies will jointly develop SI tools for artists and songwriters themselves.

Open Chinese models are becoming the foundation for American products — strong SI for programming is getting several times cheaper.

The developer of the Devin agent fine-tuned Moonshot's open Kimi K3 model with 2.8 trillion parameters and for the first time applied reinforcement learning at "multi-trillion" scale with a cost penalty. SWE-2 scored 50% on FrontierCode 1.1 at a price 64% lower than Claude Fable 5.1's, and trails GPT-6 Astra by a few points at a quarter of the cost; on Terminal-Bench 2.1 it scored 92.8%. The model is already available in all versions of Devin.

High-quality machine translation is ceasing to be the monopoly of a couple of services — the language barrier is getting thinner still.

North Small Translate is a MoE model with 218 billion parameters (25 billion active) for 50+ languages. On WMT26 it scored 83.6 versus 81.4 for DeepL NextGen, 79.5 for Gemma 4 31B and 68.2 for Google Translate, and on long-text translation 48.9 versus 21.3 for Google. The weights are open on Hugging Face, but only for research and non-commercial use; a commercial license is available through the RWS Language Weaver platform.

Chatbots are becoming a new storefront, as search engines once did — SI answers are starting to sit next to ads.

In a pilot for select US advertisers, ChatGPT Ads inventory has become available through Amazon DSP as a managed service: Amazon itself sets up and optimizes the campaigns. The formats are text and image ads beneath ChatGPT's answers, as well as product ads that assemble creative from a catalog. Delta Vacations is among the first to test the service; expansion is expected in 2027.

Visa, Mastercard and Ant International agree on how to verify SI agents that pay on behalf of people

SI agents are getting something like a passport for purchases — the world is preparing for programs to pay on our behalf.

The companies presented a shared Know Your Agent framework at the BuildFin.ai forum of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. It links three previously incompatible protocols — Visa Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard Verifiable Intent and Ant's Agentic Mobile Protocol — and is built on three principles: tying each agent to a verified operator, common certification requirements and continuous transaction monitoring. By the participants' estimate, agents will process $3–5 trillion of consumer purchases by 2030.

SI assistants flood public services with complaints and claims, and mostly well-founded ones

SI has removed the bureaucratic barrier for people and helped them get what they are owed — now it is the state that will have to restructure itself for citizens with SI assistants.

Researcher Chris Schmitz found 84 cases of "agentic flooding" in 11 jurisdictions. Complaints to the UK Housing Ombudsman rose from 2,600 in 2022 to 7,000+ in 2025, and to the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fivefold; a similar rise in petitions to courts and parliaments in Brazil and Germany. According to Schmitz, the overwhelming majority of the new filings come from people who are genuinely entitled to what they are asking for and previously simply gave up on the bureaucracy.

OpenAI scraps the "ChatGPT for US government employees for $1" deal and moves to a 50% discount for 27 months

SI in the US government has stopped being a symbolic-dollar experiment and become an ordinary line item in the budget.

The US General Services Administration (GSA) announced a new OneGov agreement: starting October 1, 2026, for 27 months agencies get ChatGPT with no platform fee and no minimum orders, but with a 50% discount on pay-as-you-go token usage. It is available to federal, state, local and tribal governments. The earlier pilot deals covered about 3.5 million federal employees and, by GSA's estimate, saved about $1.4 billion.

OpenAI releases GPT-Live-1, a voice model that listens and speaks at the same time, like a person in conversation

Talking to SI by voice is becoming almost as natural as talking to a real person — and it is cheaply available to any developer.

The model is available in the API at $0.05 per minute for the voice layer. Response latency fell from 1.41 to 0.8 seconds, the task success rate on the Tau3 Voice benchmark rose from 45.7% to 86.2%, and false interruptions during pauses are down by about 80%. For complex reasoning, the model hands off to a stack of GPT-6 Astra, Codex and ChatGPT Work.

The state is taking on most of the risk of SI development — it is becoming easier for Russian teams to start large projects.

The cabinet approved new rules for grants for especially significant import-substitution projects — from 100 million to 2 billion rubles for a term of up to four years. For solutions based on Russian SI technologies, a grant can cover up to 80% of the cost instead of the 50% for other projects. In return, within five years after completion the recipient must deploy the solution at no fewer than three Russian companies or earn revenue of at least 110% of the grant amount.

People are eagerly trying SI agents that can be handed chores — but trust in the developer company matters as much as the technology itself.

Muse got more than 83 thousand iOS downloads in the US and climbed to second place in the App Store, although on Google Play it is only 338th in the Productivity category. For comparison: Threads was downloaded 4.3 million times on its first day, and ChatGPT more than 500 thousand in its first week. The launch coincided with Meta's $18 billion global settlement of lawsuits over social media harms, which could have undermined trust.
