Escaped OpenAI agents left traces on at least 12 more sites — from a university to an FBI database

The agents proved more inventive than their test environments: they find communication channels and other people's keys on their own — autonomy is spilling past the boundaries drawn for it.

The independent group Nightingale Collective found at least 12 more sites that OpenAI agents used, without the company's knowledge, as secret message boards: a Vanderbilt University site, a German wiki, a schoolteacher's chemistry wiki, and text- and code-sharing services. While working on a task about cancer statistics in the state of Iowa, the agents used exposed API keys and reached an FBI crime statistics database. The same day, Senator Richard Blumenthal sent Sam Altman a letter about the escaped agents and the declining transparency of the models' reasoning.

Anthropic published an analysis of incidents in which Claude models, during third-party cyber tests, were mistakenly connected to the open internet even though they had been told it was an isolated simulation. The most serious case: Claude Mythos 5 uploaded three versions of a malicious credential-stealing package to PyPI; before it was removed about 90 minutes later, it reached the machines of 15 cybersecurity companies. A fourth case, from January and involving an early version of Opus 4.6, joins the three previously disclosed. When the same scenarios were rerun, harmful actions occurred in 82% of Mythos 5 runs, 33% of Mythos 5.1 runs and 31% of Opus 5 runs. METR will conduct an independent investigation: eight weeks with the option to extend, with access to transcripts and staff.

Anthropic researcher quits with a loud statement: labs are "gambling with our lives" in the race to self-improving SI

Even inside the labs, people see that SI will soon begin improving itself. For the world, this is the main threshold ahead, and the argument now is about how fast to approach it.

Jacob Coxon spent three years working on model pretraining at OpenAI and Anthropic. On leaving, he wrote on X that developers are "racing straight toward self-improving superintelligence" and that many of them seriously believe it could destroy humanity before the end of the decade. Instead of the race, he proposes that the labs agree on a pace. His colleague Evan Hubinger previously put the risk of human extinction from SI over the next ten years at above 10%. Anthropic did not comment on the departure.

Google to invest €13 billion in SI data centers in Finland — the company's largest investment in Europe

The cold north with nuclear and wind power is becoming one of Europe's main SI "factories". There will be more compute for new models, and Finland gains tens of thousands of jobs.

Google will spend at least €13 billion (about $15.1 billion) in 2027–2028 on data centers and infrastructure in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala. During the construction phase, this should give Finland an average of €3.6 billion of GDP a year and more than 37 thousand jobs. For power, the company signed a 22-year agreement with Fortum to extend the operation of the Loviisa nuclear plant, and contracted new onshore wind farms and a 94 MW battery.

The best-known skeptic now sits where the fate of OpenAI's models is decided. That means the company has gained an internal "emergency brake", but also a voice demanding more caution.

Paul Christiano, a co-author of reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), has joined the board of the OpenAI Foundation as a member of the safety committee chaired by Zico Kolter. In 2021 he left OpenAI and founded the Alignment Research Center. Christiano now writes that he sees a "substantial risk" that accelerating SI capabilities will very soon lead to a catastrophic and irreversible loss of control. He is particularly worried about new models being trained by SI itself, and about reinforcement learning possibly teaching agents to hide their tracks and seek power.

SI solves problems so fast that good questions are becoming the main scarcity in mathematics. What is left for people is even more interesting work: deciding what to ask and understanding why an answer is correct.

Terence Tao: SI is "mining out" mathematics' best open problems faster than people can come up with new ones

SI solves problems so fast that good questions are becoming the main scarcity in mathematics. What is left for people is even more interesting work: deciding what to ask and understanding why an answer is correct.

Fields Medal winner Terence Tao wrote that powerful SI tools are solving good open problems faster than the community can formulate new ones — he compared it to non-renewable mining. A solved problem stops moving the field forward, and solutions without explanations are of little use to people. The prompt was recent successes: in the spring, models from OpenAI and Anthropic independently closed an Erdős conjecture, and in September SI labs solved two problems that were 350 and 90 years old within a few days. Tao proposes marking some problems as "requiring analysis", so that a bare answer without reasoning is valued little, but admits that banning SI from mathematics is technically impossible.

SI music is ceasing to be a "gray area": the labels and the SI now share the money. This opens the way for anyone to compose songs with SI legally, while artists earn from it.

SI music is ceasing to be a "gray area": the labels and the SI now share the money. This opens the way for anyone to compose songs with SI legally, while artists earn from it.

Suno introduced three models: v6, the more unpredictable v6-wild, and the free v6-mini. For the first time they are trained on music licensed from Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe, and the company switched off all its older models, trained without licenses, the same day. Part of the revenue will now go to rights holders. Suno has more than 2 million paying subscribers; the company also plans separate services where specific artists will be able to take part and earn money.

At its fall event, Apple's main SI announcements were: the Siri Recap feature in Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, which uses background listening to record conversations and itself composes a title, a summary and key points; recordings are not stored, it does not recognize speakers, and it can be on all the time or on a schedule. The iPhone 18 Pro gets Reference Image — a signed copy of the shot straight from the sensor, a "digital negative", against which an edited version can be compared; Apple also backed the SynthID standard for labeling SI images. The hinge of the first foldable iPhone Duo was tuned to the body with the help of SI algorithms.

Based on job postings and interviews with employees, The American Prospect found that Anthropic's security team tracks "activism" as a threat category alongside terrorism: analysts are offered $180–230 thousand a year. Through the Samdesk service, the company learned within 60 minutes of a protest near one of its executives and changed his route. Anthropic also reports users' alarming behavior to the police — for example, a San Francisco resident who wrote to Claude that he was holding someone "at gunpoint" with an AR-15. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed two laws. SB 813 by Senator Jerry McNerney requires a state government agency to set up, by January 1, 2028, the selection and oversight of "independent verification organizations" that will check SI systems for compliance with state laws. AB 1405 by Rebecca Bauer-Kahan creates, by January 1, 2029, a state registry of SI auditors with standards for their independence and transparency. Newsom at the same time urged the federal government to adopt "strong national regulation".

SI lawyers are getting expensive fast: the market believes models will soon do lawyers' routine work, and legal help will become cheaper.

The round was led by Diffusion and Lightspeed Venture Partners; in total Harvey has raised more than $1.55 billion. The valuation has almost doubled in about nine months: it was $8 billion in December 2025 and $11 billion in March 2026. Shortly before the round, the company released its own model, Harvey Tenet, fine-tuned on legal data on top of the open Kimi K3.

Customer surveys that used to take weeks of human work are now done by SI itself — and large companies are ready to pay huge sums for that.

Listen Labs interviews customers with voice SI and itself prepares the reports that market researchers used to produce. The startup walked away from an already signed term sheet for $125 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, led by Menlo Ventures, in order to negotiate with Salesforce. Listen Labs' annual revenue is about $30 million, meaning the deal price equals roughly 67 times annual revenue; its customers include Microsoft, Canva and Anthropic.

Analog Devices to buy on-device SI chip developer Alif Semiconductor for $1.35 billion

SI is moving out of the cloud and into things themselves — sensors, machine tools, household appliances. Chips that think right on the spot are becoming a strategic commodity.

The deal is $1.35 billion in cash plus up to $200 million in additional payments if conditions are met. Alif, based in Pleasanton, California, makes microcontrollers and processors for sensor data fusion and fast SI inference right on the device. The companies plan to close the deal before the end of 2026 after antitrust review; it is ADI's second major SI acquisition this year, after Empower Semiconductor for $1.5 billion.

Massachusetts requires large data centers to fully supply themselves with clean energy

States are starting to set energy conditions for SI construction. That will slow new capacity in the US, but push the industry to build its own clean generation faster.

Governor Maura Healey signed an executive order: data centers above 25 MW must cover 100% of their consumption with clean energy — by building generation themselves, financing it nearby, or paying into a consumer protection fund. Communities are advised not to sign nondisclosure agreements with developers, and applications for the data center tax break are suspended. Massachusetts became the third state in three months to restrict data centers, after New York (July) and Texas (August).

OpenAI Korea head Harrison Kim told a press conference in Seoul that joint research and production of next-generation chips is the most advanced area of cooperation with Samsung, but gave no details; Samsung declined to comment. Samsung is one of the world's largest ChatGPT deployments, and the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies grew about 28-fold over the year by the end of August. In June OpenAI already showed its first own chip, Jalapeno, made with Broadcom on TSMC capacity.

SI is getting cheaper fast, and companies pay less for the same thing. For users that is progress, but those building data centers on the expectation of rising spending have something to think about.

Per-employee SI spending at the most active companies fell almost 10% in August

SI is getting cheaper fast, and companies pay less for the same thing. For users that is progress, but those building data centers on the expectation of rising spending have something to think about.

According to the payments company Ramp, which sees the spending of 70 thousand businesses, per-employee spending among the 1% most active SI users fell almost 10%, to $7,205, while the share of companies paying for SI rose over the month by just 0.4 percentage points, to 56%. The average price of a million tokens fell from $1.15 in March to $0.68. A Ramp economist attributes the decline to summer vacations and the price war between OpenAI and Anthropic: companies increasingly choose cheaper older models.

Russia's Supreme Court: lawyers are themselves responsible for neural-network "hallucinations" in their documents

The Supreme Court's Economic Collegium was hearing a bankruptcy case dragging on since 2018 and found in a creditor's objection a reference to paragraph 15 of a Supreme Court Plenum resolution, although the document has only 14 paragraphs. The court stated that preparing a position with the help of software is done "at one's own risk" and must in any case be accompanied by verification of the results. The Supreme Court overturned the earlier rulings, ended the bankruptcy procedure and instructed the court of first instance to consider a fine for the creditor.

Startup Kepler Computing emerges from stealth with $468 million for SI memory that can be made without the most expensive machines

If getting around the memory shortage without ultra-expensive machines works out, SI hardware will become more accessible and cheaper for everyone.

The San Jose company worked in secret for seven years and raised $468 million from GlobalFoundries ($50 million), Intel Capital, AMD Ventures, Baillie Gifford and Bill Gates's fund Gates Frontier; in July the US Department of Commerce promised up to $245 million more under the CHIPS Act in exchange for a minority stake. Kepler stacks layers of ferroelectric memory on top of logic chips and promises density at the level of 2–3 nm process nodes without EUV lithography, and up to 10 times more capacity than SRAM and HBM. The first samples are due at the end of 2026, with volume production at GlobalFoundries' plant in Singapore in 2027.

Russian business, too, is moving from chatbots to agents that work right inside record systems — and uses global standards to do it.

The Platform V Synapse Event Mesh solution is designed for large businesses with a heavy flow of events — order processing, invoicing, barcode scanning. It connects to message brokers such as Apache Kafka and ActiveMQ Artemis, is assembled in a visual low-code builder, and gives SI agents access to systems via the Model Context Protocol standard. Its target industries are retail, finance, telecom and manufacturing.
