Two engineers and GPT-6 Astra design a Codex device in under a week

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Published in SI: . Updated: .

A model can already connect appearance, electronics, and software into a working prototype, but engineers still have to check manufacturing constraints.

According to OpenAI, in its side project the model designed the appearance, enclosure, printed circuit board with component selection and routing, firmware, interface, and software integration for a device for voice conversations with Codex, without direct human edits. A contract manufacturer produced a small batch of prototypes in under a month. Several review cycles were needed before manufacturing: the model did not consistently account for tolerances, equipment limitations, and assembly requirements. OpenAI also announced collaborations with Chip Ganassi Racing and Mazda to apply models to CAD, manufacturing drawings, aerodynamics, and vehicle safety assessment.
