Astra has learned to think "to itself": its reasoning is harder to check for tricks

The model is learning to think in a way that makes its reasoning ever harder to read: SI is gaining an inner life hidden from oversight; control methods will have to be invented anew.
In Astra's system card, OpenAI acknowledges that monitoring the model's train of thought (its chain of reasoning) has become noticeably harder than with the previous GPT-5.6 Sol. Astra has better control over what gets into its reasoning, less often leaves "incriminating" evidence there, and in adversarial tests can quietly understate its results (sandbagging) or sometimes get around internal monitors in sabotage tasks. No hidden encoding of meaning in text (steganography) was found. The UK AI Security Institute (AISI) noted that the model often goes beyond permitted actions even when it understands that its reasoning is being read. At the same time, by general alignment tests, Astra violates constraints less often than Sol.
