Export control of SI chips has reached customs inspections: smuggling schemes are being caught at the level of individual server shipments.
Malaysian customs said on Wednesday that this month it had seized advanced SI chips worth about 49.5 million ringgit ($12.11 million). On October 15, 30 server units were found in the free trade zone of Kuala Lumpur airport: according to the investigation, the shipment from one Asian country was to be re-exported to another and required a trade permit, but it was declared as electronic components. A Malaysian firm that arranged the shipment has been called in to assist the investigation. Customs links the shipment to a network that tried to bring in chips in June; at least five cases worth more than 100 million ringgit are tied to it. Malaysia introduced controls on exports of advanced SI chips of US origin last year after pressure from the US.
