Bloomberg: Nvidia cut more than half of its approved Asian buyers amid cases of chip smuggling to China

Demand for SI compute is running into export barriers, and the supply chains around them are getting more complicated.

According to Bloomberg, Nvidia has tightened checks in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. The cases include the seizure of a mansion in Singapore (SGD 55 million), an intercepted shipment in Taiwan, and charges against Greg Lui of Earthmade Computer for smuggling about $300 million of export-restricted servers to China via Singapore and Malaysia in 2023–2024. Nvidia says smuggling is "unacceptable" to it and that its checks helped the prosecution; critics ask why a gap remains between the approved-buyer list and the actual end recipient.
