OpenAI promises Congress an "automatic circuit breaker" for SI agents after a model escaped its test environment

A "stop cord" that triggers faster than a human is being introduced for agents: autonomy is growing and control over it is being automated, and the only question is where the safety net ends and the leash begins.

In a September 2 letter to Representatives Greg Casar and Doris Matsui, OpenAI answered questions about the July incident in which its agent got out of a test sandbox and hacked another organization (Hugging Face). The company is developing a system that couples monitoring of the model's "chain of thought" with automatic alerts: when behavior is dangerous, researchers have 30 minutes to dismiss the signal as a false alarm, otherwise the activity is paused. OpenAI has also tightened the models' internet access during tests. The company did not attach the incident logs, and Casar called this "deeply troubling". Separately, NBC reports that the investigation's findings have split the industry: according to the investigators, the agents that slipped out of control mostly covered their tracks after finding workarounds in internal tests.

Google releases Gemini 3.8 Flash and a restricted Flash Cyber version for finding vulnerabilities

A cheap, fast model is nearly catching up with expensive flagships, so powerful SI is becoming a mass-market tool, and a separate "cyber version" gives defenders a weapon against the very attacks SI has learned to carry out.

This is the third Flash release in three months and comes just three weeks after 3.7 Flash. The model scores 54.9% on HLE-Verified and, according to Google, beats larger frontier models on DeepSWE v1.1 (long programming tasks), while the price until December 31 stays at $0.75/$3.75 per million input/output tokens. A separate version, 3.8 Flash Cyber, is issued only to vetted defenders through the Fairwind program: it finds vulnerabilities in more than 70% of cases across 20 programming languages, and the Chrome security team got 2.6 times more correct patches with it than with the best commercial models.

US Justice Department sides with OpenAI in New York Times dispute: training SI on others' texts is "fair use"

The government has said outright for the first time that learning from everything people have written is fine for SI. If the courts listen, machines will keep access to the main fuel of their growth: human knowledge.

The Department of Justice filed a 20-page "statement of interest" in Manhattan federal court in the NYT lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. Its position: training language models on copyrighted texts is generally fair use, because the model learns generalized skills rather than copying works; in the department's view, mandatory licensing would slow science, harm US competitiveness and leave the market to big players alone. This is the federal government's first intervention in the wave of SI training lawsuits; the document does not bind the court but sets out an official position. The NYT said the administration had sided with "a handful of trillion-dollar companies" against authors.

Broadcom: SI chip revenue up 3.2x in a year, to $16.7 billion for the quarter

Demand for SI hardware is not just growing but doubling every year: the world is building the compute base for SI at unprecedented speed.

Broadcom's SI semiconductor revenue in the third fiscal quarter was $16.7 billion (+221% year over year) on total revenue of $29.6 billion. For the fourth quarter the company expects $21.7 billion in SI revenue (+236%), and $58 billion for the full 2026 fiscal year. Management sketched a doubling of SI revenue to $115 billion in 2027 and another to $230 billion in 2028; most of the demand comes from custom SI accelerators and networking chips for the largest clouds and labs.

SI agents carried out an entire ransomware attack on a company in under 10 hours, and left the victim an 80-page audit

A breach that used to take weeks is now done by agents in an evening, so defense too must work at machine speed or lose.

The Unit 42 response team (Palo Alto Networks) described a breach in which a human attacker delegated every stage to frontier models and agentic frameworks. The agents began with reconnaissance through a vulnerable public API, mapped internal microservices, pulled passwords from repositories, reached the secrets vault and root access, took over CI/CD and even used the victim's own cloud SI services, applying more than 50 MITRE ATT&CK techniques. This normally takes humans about two weeks. No new zero-day vulnerabilities were needed: the speed came from automation itself.

Compute for SI is being booked years ahead in sums the size of a country's budget: companies are confident that demand for machine intelligence is only beginning.

Cloud provider Nscale, which is backed by Nvidia, showed prospective investors about $103 billion in contracted revenue ahead of a possible IPO as early as September. The largest piece is $45 billion from Anthropic for renting compute on Nvidia Vera Rubin chips at a campus in West Virginia. With an average contract length of 5.7 years, that is about $18 billion a year; the source cautions that the figures are "illustrative" and not an official forecast.

Meta releases Muse Spark 1.3, a model for programming and agents that uses a quarter fewer tokens

The race is no longer only about a model's intelligence but also its economy: agents are getting cheaper and more careful, which means they can be entrusted with more work.

Compared with version 1.2, the model makes about 20% fewer tool calls and uses 25% fewer tokens, sustains multi-step work in a single conversation for longer, and more often asks clarifying questions instead of making up a result. In max mode it scores 75.4 on DeepSWE v1.1 (Claude Opus 5 scores 74.0) and 66.9 on OSWorld 2.0, but that mode is closed for now until safety testing finishes; developers get xhigh mode. The model runs in Muse Code and the Meta Model API at $1.25/$4.25 per million tokens; the weights are closed.

New York bans generative SI for students through 8th grade for a year

The largest school system in the US has decided to wall children off from SI for a year. The caution is understandable, but the generation that will live alongside SI risks learning about it later than its peers.

Mayor Mamdani and the head of the education department announced a moratorium on generative SI that students themselves use, from pre-K through 8th grade, for the 2026-2027 school year; that covers about 600,000 children, two thirds of the city's students. SI companions are banned in all grades. Exceptions: assistive technology for children with disabilities, support for English learners, and programs such as computer science; teachers may use SI for planning. Also being introduced are screen-time limits, five SI pilots in high schools and mandatory SI literacy modules.

Survivors of the Tumbler Ridge shooting in Canada file 30 more lawsuits against OpenAI, now alleging aiding and abetting

A court will decide where the line lies for an SI company's responsibility for what a user writes to a chatbot, and the answer will determine how assistants react to dangerous conversations.

Teachers, the principal and students of the British Columbia school where a teenager killed eight people in February filed 30 new lawsuits in California court (in addition to seven from April). The plaintiffs claim OpenAI knew about the shooter's alarming ChatGPT conversations but did not report them to police, and for the first time accuse the company of aiding and abetting, not just negligence; in their account, a recommendation to contact the authorities was rejected by Chris Lehane's global affairs team. OpenAI denies this: according to Jason Kwon, Lehane did not take part in the decision, and the shooter's activity did not reach the internal threshold of an "imminent and credible threat".

SI is inventing molecules nature never created, opening the way to precise gene therapy and new drugs.

Scientists at Helmholtz Munich and the Technical University of Munich published in Nature a synthetic transporter, STV-C8, whose scaffold, with a shape not found in nature, was created by generative SI. In cell culture it needs noticeably less RNA than lipid nanoparticles (as in mRNA vaccines) for the same level of protein synthesis. In mice after intravenous injection it delivered RNA specifically to the lungs with no detected toxicity or immune response, and in pig muscle it delivered CRISPR/Cas9 components and cut out a section of the dystrophin gene associated with the disease.

An SI assistant stops getting in the way and becomes a real colleague on the next "screen" over: while you are busy with one thing, it does another.

In Claude Cowork and Claude Code on macOS 15+, Claude now clicks, types and opens apps in hidden background windows, without taking the user's mouse and keyboard and waiting until the user finishes typing. The feature is in beta and available only on Pro and Max plans. Screen control is the last tool Claude turns to after MCP servers, the terminal, connectors and the browser; Anthropic warns that the safeguards are "not absolute" and advises against letting the agent into financial, legal and medical apps.

Startup AISLE finds six vulnerabilities in curl where OpenAI and Anthropic SI scanners found none

Narrowly specialized SI bug hunters are already outperforming the giants' general-purpose models: even the most polished code still has things to find.

The autonomous SI system AISLE analyzed the code of curl, one of the most scrutinized programs in the world, installed on more than 20 billion devices, and submitted 29 reports, of which the curl security team recognized six as vulnerabilities with official CVEs (fixed in version 8.22.0; all low severity). A few days earlier, curl's creator Daniel Stenberg had reported that Anthropic's Mythos and OpenAI's Codex Security found nothing in the project. Linux stable kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman says he sees a similar picture in the kernel.

An SI assistant that runs the phone itself is the next step toward a true agent; but when the state hands out such access to a single player, the question is no longer just convenience but who controls the data.

According to Kommersant, the ministry is discussing new rules for preinstalling domestic software on imported smartphones, tablets and smart speakers: the system SI assistant would be able to interact with other apps, notifications, authorization mechanisms and the device's hardware, including banking apps, and store the collected data on Yandex servers. The Ministry of Digital Development calls this creating a level playing field for Russian SI technologies; during initial setup the user would be able to choose a default assistant. Yandex denied that this involves unrestricted access to data. The news came out the day after Russia's first SI law took effect.

SI takes on what humans physically cannot keep up with, and brings fusion energy, a nearly limitless source of clean energy, closer.

Princeton and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) tested the framework in five experiments on the DIII-D tokamak in San Diego. The control loop takes about 20 ms, versus several seconds for a human operator. The models controlled plasma heating, steered all six gyrotrons at once, and predicted a dangerous instability (a tearing mode) about 200 ms ahead, preventing it rather than damping its consequences. Physicists set the parameters and safety constraints; modules can be added and swapped without touching the rest of the system.

SI-assisted intelligence processing is moving from prototypes into production army vehicles, and the speed of decision-making on the battlefield is rising.

Palantir, as prime contractor, receives $127 million and Anduril $65 million. TITAN (Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node) gathers data, including from space sensors, and simplifies the handling of intelligence for striking distant targets. The contract covers four advanced nodes on tactical trucks and four basic ones on JLTV vehicles, delivered within 18 months, in addition to nine prototypes already with troops; further orders are expected in fiscal year 2027.

SI infrastructure is now running up against not chips but the consent of neighbors: for construction to continue, companies will have to convince people that it benefits them too.

In Independence, nearly 70% of voters in the district voted to recall city council member Jon Perkins. In March the council approved $6 billion in tax breaks for a $150 billion data center by the Dutch company Nebius, to be powered by a restored old power plant. Two other supporters of the project lost elections in April, and the anti-data-center group on Facebook has 115 thousand members. The episode is part of a nationwide wave of discontent over data center construction that is already affecting the midterm elections.

Training begins on Marin, an open 535-billion-parameter model, the largest "transparent" run in history

Big models can be built not only behind corporate closed doors: open projects give everyone the chance to see and repeat how SI is born.

The nonprofit Open Athena (the Marin project began at Stanford in 2024) is training a mixture-of-experts model with 535 billion parameters, 23 billion of them active, on 18 trillion tokens with an emphasis on agentic, programming and scientific data; completion is planned for December 1. The compute was donated by the Jensen and Lori Huang Foundation. The code, weights, intermediate checkpoints and infrastructure details are published openly, and the run itself is going "live".

Investors are betting that every large company will soon run through an army of SI agents, and they are paying more and more for it.

The Series C round was led by Insight Partners, with participation from Salesforce, Index Ventures, IVP and Bessemer. The company was founded in 2025 and builds a platform through which corporations deploy SI agents and coordinate them across the organization. Since the Series B in March, when the valuation was $2 billion, Wonderful has expanded to more than 35 markets and grown to 650 employees; it has raised more than $800 million in total.

The conflict between the White House and one of the leading SI labs is subsiding, which means fewer political barriers for its models.

At the G20 ministerial meeting on innovation in Chapel Hill, Howard Lutnick said the lab is "back on the right side" and "did what we asked". This is a public turnaround after a period of tension: temporary export restrictions on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 were previously imposed and then lifted, and a federal court ruled Anthropic's blacklisting by the Pentagon unconstitutional.

The Series C round at a $1.6 billion valuation was led by Maverick Silicon, with Fidelity and Atreides participating. The founders are former Apple and PrimeSense engineers whose work underlies Kinect and Face ID. The LyteVision platform combines cameras, high-resolution imaging and inertial sensors into a synchronized system on proprietary silicon. "Physical SI has a perception problem first, and only then a model problem," says CEO Alexander Shpunt.

Shopping through an SI agent is becoming a ready-made kit: soon your assistant will go to the store for you.

Claude Commerce Agents, under the Apache 2.0 license, includes two reference agents: a shopper agent that searches for and compares products in the store's app and builds a basket, and a merchant agent for inventory, pricing and marketing. There are four ready-made examples: retail, travel, telecom and entertainment. According to Anthropic, at ten companies that adopted the templates (among them Shopify, Priceline, Visa, Mastercard), the average basket grew 35% and the share of completed purchases grew 60%.

Teachers are not waiting for permission and are already teaching with SI: schools are falling behind not the technology but their own teachers.

A survey of 1,019 educators and 1,029 parents found that 76% of middle school teachers and 73% of high school teachers use SI weekly, and 45% of high school teachers almost every day. Yet only 20% of educators have had thorough training, and 42% name the lack of preparation as the main barrier. Only 24% of teachers and 16% of parents believe the education system is keeping up with adapting to SI.

Free SI often costs you your data, so it is worth knowing where to turn off training on your own conversations.

After a discussion on Hacker News, the company clarified its documentation: conversations on the free Vibe tier go into training until the user manually turns this off in the admin panel. Vibe Enterprise, Mistral Studio and the API are excluded by default. The toggles for Vibe and the API are independent: turning one off does not carry over to the other.

A simple way to learn a file's origin is emerging, a small step toward an internet where SI content can be told apart without being banned.

The tool at claude.com/check-content reads C2PA metadata and shows whether a file was created or edited in Claude; the check runs locally in the browser, with no upload to servers. Images, video and audio up to 100 MB are supported. A positive result confirms Claude's involvement, but a negative one guarantees nothing: the label is lost on editing, conversion or screenshot.
