Free ChatGPT is increasingly paid for by ads, while the paid plans stay free of them.

According to OpenAI (as relayed by The Next Web), ads in ChatGPT, launched just over eight months ago, have been added in 26 countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Advertisers now number more than 100,000 — there were about 20,000 in late August. Only users on the Free and Go plans see the ads; Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free. OpenAI says the ads are separate from the answers and do not influence them, and that conversations are not shared with advertisers. The company is testing "sponsored agents" with some US advertisers and is preparing new formats and measurement tools.
