Ai2 and Google to develop open-source NeuralGCM+ for climate projections over decades

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Published in SI: . Updated: .

Faster open models will let scientists test more possible climates decades ahead and plan water resources and adaptation.

Google.org is providing multimillion-dollar funding over three years, while Google Research is providing technical support to the Ai2 Climate Modeling team. NeuralGCM+ will connect the atmosphere, ocean, and sea ice: physical equations will describe large-scale dynamics, while SI will represent local processes such as cloud formation and rainfall. The goal is stable simulations spanning decades with smaller regional errors in temperature and precipitation, including tests in climates warmer than those in the training data. The existing atmosphere-only NeuralGCM simulates a year of global conditions in eight minutes on a single TPU, but the reliability of long-term projections remains to be demonstrated. The code, weights, and documented workflows are planned for release to independent researchers.
