Ai2 releases HiRO-ACEv2: SI reproduces global weather at 3 km resolution about 300 times cheaper than a physics-based model

Detailed modeling of extreme weather is getting hundreds of times cheaper, and more researchers can afford it.

Ai2 has introduced an update to its HiRO-ACE system: the ACE model works at a coarse 100 km resolution, and HiROv2 "sharpens" its output to 3 km detail. According to Ai2, the new version predicts several fields at once (not only rainfall) and more accurately reproduces the strongest rain, wind and pressure swings, while the whole system generates global data at 3 km for about 1/300th of the cost of the physics-based model X-SHiELD, which explicitly simulates storms. The models, paper, tutorial notebooks and demo have been published.
