OpenAI builds Pando, a Git backend for parallel work by people and coding agents

Collaboration infrastructure for agents no longer has to be constrained by conventional Git servers: thousands of parallel changes can be served without changing familiar commands.
According to OpenAI's description, Pando already serves the company's entire monorepo while retaining compatibility with the standard Git protocol and client. Updates to different branches are coordinated independently, and identical packfiles are reused across clients instead of building a new archive for each download. Thanks to this design and regional Express caches, median push latency fell by almost 80%, and the system delivers nearly a petabyte of Git data a day. The architectural tradeoff is the absence of a single point-in-time snapshot of all branches: ordering is guaranteed within each reference but not across references. One engineer and teams of Codex agents built the core of Pando in ten weeks, and production use began in April. The backend itself is not open source, but OpenAI has already contributed some client and protocol fixes to the Git project.
