MediaTek forecasts $16 billion in revenue from ASICs for SI accelerators in 2027

Custom chips are becoming a major standalone business for MediaTek, giving cloud companies another way to reduce their dependence on general-purpose accelerators.

MediaTek began shipping its first application-specific integrated circuit, or ASIC, for SI accelerators in September. At an investor conference, CEO Rick Tsai said it should generate about $2.5 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2026 and about $16 billion in 2027, matching the upper end of the previous forecast. At that level, the company expects to capture about 20% of the global market for ASICs used in SI accelerators. The next chip for a new generation of SI infrastructure is scheduled to enter commercial production in the first quarter of 2028; Tsai promises a several-fold increase in efficiency per watt and a substantial reduction in total cost.
