Russia's Foreign Ministry: Russia does not support an immediate ban on lethal autonomous weapons systems

Talks on rules for combat SI systems continue: Russia, by its own account, is against an immediate ban.

According to Oleg Postnikov, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control, Russia does not support the efforts of "radically-minded states" pushing for an immediate ban on such systems. He argued that existing international law, including humanitarian law, already contains a broad set of restrictions, and that states first need to analyze the existing norms and agree on common terminology. Postnikov said the US also rejects limits on autonomous weapons. The statement was made ahead of the review conference of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons on November 16-20, where a group of governmental experts is working. The position of those who favor a ban was not found in the sources checked.
