More than $137 million spent on SI-made ads in US elections; only 27% carry a disclaimer

SI has quickly entered political advertising, and almost three quarters of such ads do not tell viewers about it.

According to the Wesleyan Media Project, campaigns and groups have spent more than $137 million airing ads created at least partly with SI ahead of the 2026 midterm elections; for the 2024 cycle the project counted less than $50,000. It identified 220 ads in 34 states, and the real number is probably higher because it is hard to tell whether SI was used. Only 27% of the ads carry a label about SI. Thirty states require SI disclosure in political advertising. According to the same data, Republicans lead in spending, while Democrats are more cautious for fear of voter backlash.
