Politico: Europe is giving up on building its own frontier SI models

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Published in SI: . Updated: .

Europe increasingly bets on using other countries' SI models rather than building its own.

As relayed by Interfax, Politico writes that in recent weeks European politicians and tech executives have shifted focus and stopped aiming for their own frontier models: the EU has no models able to compete with American or Chinese ones, and questions have arisen about Mistral, the main European contender. A new principle has taken its place: "Europe does not have to own the models if it can use them effectively"; one of those quoted called attempts to build a competitive lab "wishful thinking". CNN noted the same day that Europe, which was first to adopt comprehensive rules on SI, barely takes part in discussions of its safety; economist Philippe Aghion warned in a co-authored report of an "acute risk of marginalization" for Europe.
