As soon as a closed product gets a good idea, the open community quickly makes a free copy.
OpenAI introduced Dots in September, "always-on" agents on their own cloud computer. According to The Register, users complain of task failures, connection problems, disappearing agents and refusals tied to abuse protection. Meanwhile open alternatives have appeared: OpenDots from Tawkit/CopilotKit, which can be self-hosted with any OpenAI-compatible model, and Open Dot from Composio, which runs locally on a Mac with an OpenAI key or open models such as Kimi, DeepSeek and Qwen via OpenRouter.
