Meta uses SI to find ads that lead to child sexual abuse material

SI works as a filter where people cannot keep up with the volume, and it catches hidden chains rather than only obvious content.
Meta deployed a large language model that catches signposting, ads that look harmless but lead users to prohibited content: the company now checks where an ad sends people, not only what the ad says. Added are enhanced SI scans and a "red team" SI agent that tests the defenses for weaknesses. According to Meta, in the first half of 2026 it actioned 33.2 million pieces of content related to child sexual exploitation on Facebook and Instagram, 97% before user reports. TechCrunch recalls the August 2026 settlement of an $18 billion child safety lawsuit involving 29 states.
