Google DeepMind opens an institute for public debate on AGI, with essays on slowing down and testing models

Labs are starting to argue publicly about how to live with AGI, which means that inside the industry its arrival is already considered a matter of years, not decades.
The DeepMind Institute is led by DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg and James Manyika, with Demis Hassabis as chair; its task is to bring to the surface different views on AGI inside Google and in the scientific community, and the authors "will not always agree." The first collection is four essays: economic policy for AGI shocks, preserving the transparency of models' reasoning, principles of human flourishing, and evaluation of frontier models. Hassabis repeats the idea of a US-led standards body where developers voluntarily submit models for testing before release, with independent tests and the possibility of a coordinated slowdown.
