OpenAI employees warned management for years about weak protection for research

As models become more valuable, weak internal access controls create a risk of research loss, while coding agents make it easier to search large repositories for information.
According to a Reuters investigation, five sources described employee complaints about broad internal access to code and project documentation, including concerns raised with management and the board before ChatGPT launched. Three sources also described irregular reviews of internal tools and research sandboxes. OpenAI responded that its most sensitive work and model weights are stored separately under strict permissions and that tools are now reviewed regularly. In August, product chief Thibault Sottiaux assigned a quarter of production engineers to strengthen internal defenses. The investigation followed October charges against an OpenAI engineer over a recording device installed in an executive conference room; the company presents that and other cases as examples of identifying and responding to risks.
