OpenAI puts ChatGPT search-like queries at 20% of Google's volume, with 1.2 billion weekly users

Information searches increasingly begin with a conversation with SI, although the stated 20% remains OpenAI's internal metric rather than a measured market share.

ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry said weekly active users grew from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in two months, while voice input, including dictation, is used by 250 million people a week. By his estimate, ChatGPT's search-like query volume has reached roughly one-fifth of Google's. OpenAI counts a user query that results in a web search as such a request; simple questions asking for a definition or instructions without web search are excluded. This is OpenAI's own estimate, not an independently verified comparison of market shares.
