NYT and three Tribune newspapers sue Brave over its page index for SI

The copyright dispute is expanding from model developers to the provider of a search index through which SI companies obtain publishers' texts.

Two lawsuits were filed in Manhattan federal court: one by the New York Times and another by the Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Orlando Sentinel. The publishers allege that Brave built an index of more than 30 billion pages using an unidentified crawler and sold access to the material to companies including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI, and Cohere. The complaints also cover the paywall-bypass feature and the blocking of publisher ads while Brave sells its own. The New York Times seeks an injunction and damages. An NYT spokesperson called Brave's actions unlawful use of content; Perplexity criticized the lawsuit, and the other named companies had not given The Verge comments by publication time.
