OpenAI introduces LifeVal to test agents on everyday tasks

The usefulness of a personal agent is to be assessed by completed everyday tasks that people actually want to delegate, not only by exam-style tests.
According to OpenAI, LifeVal measures the completion of practical tasks rather than answers to academic questions: finding childcare and housing, organizing volunteers, household budgeting, shopping, health, education, and accessing government services. The areas were selected using US and international time-use studies and a representative survey of 3,995 people about the tasks they would most like help with. OpenAI used the evaluation internally for a year while training models to work with browsers, computers, and connected apps. In the published examples, the system goes beyond advice: it produces a shortlist, an action plan, or a prepared operation while leaving the final choice for the user to confirm.
