Google to keep Search and Gemini off for students unless administrators explicitly enable them

Schools will get an explicit choice about enabling SI tools, but that choice will also affect familiar Search; a new mode will help students reason instead of simply giving them answers.

The new rules will affect K–12 student accounts: Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search will be entirely off until a school administrator activates them. Schools cannot disable SI features separately while keeping Search: Google says Search and SI are deeply integrated. The company argues that this gives schools more control; Senator Bernie Sanders and other local politicians criticized the choice. At the same time, Guided Learning has become globally available in Classroom, and a pilot in Search will begin at several US schools in November: instead of providing a ready answer, the system will ask guiding questions and lead the student through the steps.
