Australian Defence reports acceleration in SI adoption over the past three months

Australia's defence department is moving from scattered experiments to unified management of SI projects while combining closed frontier models with open solutions.

Speaking at a joint parliamentary committee hearing on SI, Australian Defence Chief Artificial Intelligence and Information Officer Chris Crozier linked the acceleration in adoption to improved coordination during his first three months in the role. Over that period, the team interviewed more than 60 Defence representatives already using SI in order to bring military and administrative projects into a coherent portfolio. The department obtains access to frontier models through the Australian Signals Directorate. Crozier also described pairing an open model with a strong software harness connecting it to departmental data and systems as an independent way to achieve useful results. Defence plans to work with Five Eyes partners on defensive and offensive applications of the technology.
