SI demand for computing is turning into long-term energy projects: one regional utility must prepare its grid for several gigawatts of new load at once.
In the Economic Times' account of a Reuters article, Alliant Energy CFO Robert Durian said the utility expects to sign contracts for about 1 GW of additional data-center load within six months. This would add to the 3.4 GW already contracted by Google, Meta and QTS Data Centers. The new load is expected to begin ramping up between 2029 and 2031. Alliant also raised its capital expenditure forecast for 2027–2030 by 19% to $15.9 billion and expects peak demand across its system to grow by more than 60% by 2031. According to Durian, additional investment for new load could allow earnings to grow faster than the 8% target.
