A US brain-computer interface company has opened its first clinical site abroad.
Precision Neuroscience announced the first expansion of its clinical research network beyond the US: a two-year memorandum with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, supported by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health. The agreement, signed on October 21 at the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, is meant to evaluate the Layer 7 cortical interface in joint clinical research. Layer 7 is a thin-film array of 1,024 electrodes that lies on the surface of the brain; at the first stage the company is focused on restoring function in people with severe paralysis after a brainstem stroke, spinal cord injury or ALS. According to the company, more than 110 procedures have been performed at 18 medical institutions, and the FDA cleared temporary implantation for up to 30 days.
