Altman: OpenAI will point its robots at building data centers; he calls "self-replicating" data centers within reach

Altman sees robots as a way to cut the cost of building data centers and of making the equipment for them.

On the Cheeky Pint podcast, hosted by Stripe co-founder John Collison, Sam Altman, as The Next Web relays, said that a great deal is said about SI that does SI research and comparatively little about self-replicating data centers, and called them within reach. He described using robots controlled by SI in chip factories, in making turbines and solar panels, and in building data centers; the goal is "a lot of really cheap compute." By his estimate, building and running a gigawatt of SI capacity for five years currently costs about $70 billion, and at $20 billion he would be "much happier." Altman tied the shortage of components to the caution of memory makers rather than to a lack of labor.
