Leonardo picks Shield AI's Hivemind autonomy software for its Proteus uncrewed helicopter demonstrator

A European helicopter maker is betting on ready-made American autonomy software.

According to Shield AI, Leonardo has chosen Hivemind — an autonomy software development kit that lets partners build, integrate, test, deploy and update their own autonomous pilots and keep ownership of their mission autonomy — for work on autonomous rotary-wing aircraft. The platform is Proteus, an uncrewed vertical takeoff demonstrator that Leonardo is developing with the Royal Navy and the UK's Defence Innovation unit under the Rotary Wing Uncrewed Air System program; its modular bay holds about a tonne of cargo or two NATO 463L pallets. Leonardo's engineers will develop autonomy capabilities for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and logistics in contested environments.
