Europe is backing production of the power chips that data centers for SI also need.
According to Euronews, the European Commission approved €319 million in Austrian state aid for upgrading Infineon's Villach (Carinthia) site, a €1.1 billion project due to be completed by 2034. The plant will be the world's first high-volume producer of gallium nitride power semiconductors on 300 mm wafers; the chips are needed for chargers, data centers for SI, electric vehicles, solar and wind installations, and 5G/6G base stations. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said the aid will help ensure that the future of the industry "will not be shaped solely in Asia or the United States." The EU aims to raise its share of global chip production from 10% in 2023 to 20% by 2030.
