In Berlin, SI cameras will start detecting violence on the street, and the city will have to show that protection from crime and protection of data can go together.

According to POLITICO Europe, SI-assisted video surveillance will begin at Kottbusser Tor in November: 30 cameras will cover the square around the clock and automatically detect violence and emergencies. After a trial period the system is to move to regular operation in early December. The legal basis is the reform of the public safety and order law passed by the ruling coalition. Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) justified the step by saying more than 900 offenses, including more than 300 assaults, were recorded nearby over 12 months. Police demonstrated the system on a staged fight: in the station, the system raised an alarm. POLITICO Europe writes that the surveillance is not as anonymous as it was first described.
