Google opens Android Studio to third-party SI agents and unveils new Gemini APIs for apps

Google lets Android developers work with competitors' agents, and lets apps plug into its own agents.

According to The Decoder, the "Bring Your Own Agent" feature connects more than 40 coding agents, including Claude Agent, Codex and Google Antigravity, to Android Studio over the open Agent Client Protocol: they get access to the project structure, the emulator and system logs. For apps, Google introduced the Agentic API (alpha, built on Gemini Nano 4), the AppFunctions API (beta, built on MCP), an agent-to-UI interface (alpha) and the Connected Apps Platform (preview). Google also updated the Android CLI and added the Android Bench 2.0 leaderboard for evaluating models.
