The race for optics inside data centers is producing deals worth tens of billions: the links between chips are becoming as scarce as the chips themselves.

According to Bloomberg (as relayed by AI Weekly), citing people familiar with the matter, Marvell Technology is in advanced talks to acquire Lumentum, a maker of data-center optics; an announcement could come "as early as next week," no final agreement has been reached, and details could change. Lumentum's market value is about $83 billion and Marvell's about $221 billion. A deal would combine Marvell's digital signal processors with Lumentum's lasers and optical transceivers as SI clusters shift from copper to optical connections between GPUs. By the same account, Nvidia is both a customer of Lumentum and, since March, a shareholder with a $2 billion stake. Lumentum shares rose 11% and Marvell shares fell about 8%.
