Europe's taxi companies are preparing for driverless cars, but the timing depends on signed contracts and German approval.

According to the companies' press release, the letter of intent provides for deploying the Tensor Robocar as autonomous taxis operated by Münchner Taxi Zentrum: as a first step, up to 500 vehicles in German cities, subject to final agreements and Level 4 approval in Germany. Under the operator-led model, the taxi fleet runs the service and keeps its customers and brand, while Tensor sells the car and provides autonomous driving by subscription. The partners aim to place another 10,000 vehicles with European operators within 24 months of the Robocar becoming available in Europe. The plans were announced at the Madrid Autonomous Mobility Summit; according to the companies, Germany has about 50,000 taxis and Europe about 500,000.
