SI is becoming a regular topic of meetings between states: two large economies are creating a separate channel for talks on it.

At a meeting in Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to Kyodo, agreed to strengthen critical-mineral supply chains and to create a framework for a high-level dialogue on SI. The leaders also announced cooperation between defense industries, private-sector cooperation on fusion energy and hydrogen, and stronger deterrence in cyberspace after a series of data breaches; three joint statements were issued. It is Merz's first visit to Japan since taking office in May 2025.
