China's CXMT to start HBM3E memory production at a yield of about 20–30%, Reuters reports

The shortage of memory for SI chips is pushing China to launch its own production even with a high reject rate.

According to Reuters (as published by The Economic Times), citing two people familiar with the plans, CXMT, China's largest DRAM maker, has sent HBM3E samples to several Chinese SI chip designers and, per one source, expects to begin limited production in the next two months. The share of usable chips is about 20–30%, versus about 70% at SK hynix. The company is going ahead because of an acute shortage of SI memory at Chinese accelerator makers; Washington tightened export controls on some HBM bound for China in December 2024, and Chinese companies are seeking memory through unofficial channels, where it costs several times more. The Information was first to report CXMT's plans.
