OpenAI plans to buy Google's TPU chips for SI, The Information reports

Labs are not tying themselves to one chip supplier: OpenAI is reportedly adding a competitor's TPUs to Nvidia GPUs and its own chip.

According to The Information (text paywalled; as retold by Reuters), OpenAI intends to buy Google's tensor processing units. A week earlier OpenAI announced that its frontier models would become available through Google Cloud. Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers this year; Alphabet's chief financial officer Anat Ashkenazi has said most of the revenue from TPU agreements will be recognized in 2027. OpenAI remains one of the largest buyers of Nvidia GPUs, and in June it showed its first custom chip, made with Broadcom, which it planned to deploy by the end of the year. Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet will spend up to $600 billion on SI infrastructure this year.
