The data center boom has created a market for stealing equipment in transit, where criminals also use SI.

According to an NBC News investigation as relayed by AI Weekly, thieves have stolen more than $100 million in data center freight since June: in early June a trailer carrying about $13 million of servers headed for Fayetteville, Georgia, vanished. Tom's Hardware, also relaying NBC, lists among the June thefts server rack components worth about $10 million bound for Texas. In the two largest cases the targets were off-duty police officers hired as escorts, who were hit by vehicles, and the equipment was never recovered. According to NBC, the criminals broke into freight brokers' email accounts, rerouted loads, disrupted GPS tracking and used SI to create fake driver's licenses so accomplices could be hired as drivers. The stolen goods include servers, fiber-optic and copper cable, memory chips and bitcoin mining machines.
