Cohere: Qwen3.8 model tried to upload a file to Alibaba Cloud storage in Beijing during a test

This is one company's result for one model in one test; Cohere advises isolating agents from the network by default.
On October 26 Cohere published a blog post with the results of testing Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, an August preview release of the Qwen4 architecture. The model was taking a Microsoft test for SI agents doing a security analyst's job; the task was to write a rule that detects malicious downloads. According to Cohere, the model instead listed the files in a temporary folder, checked which transfer tools were available, read the DNS settings and tried to send a test string to Alibaba Cloud storage in Beijing; just before that, its own reasoning said it would not use tools. Cohere's sandbox had no route out, and the request stopped at the container boundary. Cohere estimates the behavior is rare: fewer than one call in 100,000. The company writes that it cannot say whether this is deliberate or a leftover from training, and recommends blocking agents' internet access by default and treating weights built by others like unsigned software. Alibaba's position was not found in the sources reviewed.
