Financial firms have become major buyers of compute capacity and are backing new chips.

According to Bloomberg (relayed by The Decoder), Jane Street and Hudson River Trading are competing for compute: one executive estimates their spending on it at 10-20 times what it was before ChatGPT launched. XTX Markets is building a data center in Finland; Jane Street has a data center in Texas with more than 4,000 Nvidia GPUs, invested $1 billion in CoreWeave and committed $6 billion to its services; Hudson River spends $1 billion a year on SI and signed a multiyear agreement with CoreWeave. Jane Street led a funding round for the chip startup Etched and became the first customer for its SI chip.
