Biological computer made of human cells controls a robot dog

Living cells are starting to serve as the computer for a robot: an early step that still needs confirmation.

The startup Cortical Labs built the CL1, a biological computer made of living cells: it was trained to move toward a target in a simulated two-dimensional environment, and the training data was then used to control the movements of a real robot dog. Its creators believe that replicating neural networks with cells could yield more efficient and flexible computers. The company's paper has not yet been peer-reviewed; Ferrante Neri of the Education University of Hong Kong, who was not involved in the work, called the result promising evidence of learning from limited experience under these experimental conditions.
