Western Australia's government demands a refund from Deloitte over a university-merger report with nonexistent references and wrong sums

SI errors in a consultant's paid work cost the consultant a refund: clients are starting to demand checks of what a model wrote.

According to The Next Web, citing Guardian Australia, the Western Australian government is asking for a faster refund of the A$166,000 paid to Deloitte for a cost-benefit analysis of merging three universities: the University of Western Australia, Curtin and Murdoch. The report was found to contain references to sources that do not exist; Deloitte stated that it used generative SI to gather material, summarise and proofread. Guardian Australia also found wrong sums in the appendix: two cost items for the Curtin–UWA merger add up to A$659 million, while the report gives A$399 million. A government spokesperson said the state was "very disappointed"; the government says it was told the errors do not change the report's calculations and conclusions.
