r/opensource moderators ban projects that involve SI; members start a rival subreddit

Part of the open-source community is closing the door on projects with SI while another part moves to its own subreddit: the argument over whether SI belongs to open development is only beginning.

According to The Verge, the moderators of the large r/opensource subreddit on Reddit have published new submission rules: projects that use SI, are made by SI or are intended for SI are not accepted, because "SI, as it exists today, is incongruent" with the open-source community. The comments erupted in a backlash and a rival subreddit, r/trueopensource, appeared. Moderator Wolvereness explained that exceptions are possible, for example software with incidental SI-based accessibility features such as automatic captioning. Critics say the rules are too broad and vague and point out that the Linux kernel already contains SI-written code, so such projects could fall under the ban too. The rules also add other restrictions on posts.
