An SI assistant can invent convincing references, so references in scientific papers need to be checked against the original source.
TorrentFreak reports that the paper "Z-Library and Full-Text Access: Democratizing Knowledge or Undermining Copyright Ethics?" (New Review of Academic Librarianship, October 2026) contains references to materials that could not be found, including an article by TorrentFreak itself and publications attributed to the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology and College & Research Libraries. The authors, two librarians at Nigerian universities, said they used Consensus AI to sift literature and ChatGPT for language editing; the detector Pangram, according to the outlet, judged the abstract and conclusions "likely fully" written by SI. The lead author left questions unanswered, and the publisher referred the matter to its ethics team; there is no decision on a correction or retraction.
